A really interesting piece singer-songwriter goodness from Amy Klein, former member of Titus Andronicus. “Valerie” is a very rock ballad type of song in every way, from the role of guitars to the vocal melodies Klein deploys. The latter is what’s most interesting — her style of singing is different from a lot of singer-songwriters, those that use lilting, melismatic ranges, even in folk-rock songs. “Valerie” is deliberately classic, a song that you can hotswap Bruce Springsteen onto if you wished, although that would make it immediately less interesting. Even the wistful nostalgia of the video evokes that pedigree: traveling musicians, leather jackets, and of course New York. It will be interesting to see how else she meets the tropes of the genre.
