The good old boys in Local Natives are ready for the national stage. On “Past Lives” they take the Aaron Deessner-assisted sound from Hummingbird and truly put their own, fresh stamp on it. It’s epic, but not chamber-like; it’s serious, but not stately. The drum break and vocal pitch crack are two of the most thrilling moments in indie music this year. Who knows what Local Natives are up to this year, but they’re on the right track.
