The challenge of synth-rock is to in taking nostalgic elements of 80s popular music — the last time synths were prominent in rock and rock-adjacent music — and to combine it with all the luxuries and comforts we expect from today’s electronic music. Operators strikes that careful balance. Like many before them, like Editors and Wolf Parade, they know how to underpin these squishy synth sounds with yelping rock vocals. The whole thing is incredibly freeing. It’s sweaty catharsis music for where we are today.
