Twenty years ago this type of song might’ve fallen into some adult contemporary Enya-esque mysticism; I’m glad we’re here today. The soaring-across-the-world vocals and the spirited performance of Szjerdene lends itself to that kind of soundscape, but production by Lapalux gives it a more urgent edge. It starts out elliptical, mournful: “Protesting in vain / ready to explode,” and before you know it, it does. Definitely earned that dramatic drop.
Szjerdene’s Paragon EP is out November 5. Pre-order here on iTunes.
