The first time I noticed the LA-based band was when they premiered their decidedly “>NSFW music video for “Life Come Into Me,” which features an audition of a variety of dudes performing their best and most obscene strip tease. Other than being well-shot and funny, it was paired with a direly sad song, and that left a note in my mind about Babes — they’re sad, but they can make it funny. “Lonely Forever” isn’t a funny song, but the self-awareness of leaning so hard on sadness is key. It’s why they can fill it up with molten hot synths and 80s pop beats. Upbeat and down trodden is always a great flavor.
The new album is Untitled (Five Tears) and it’s out October 30 via Barsuk.
