Contemporary R&B is a dark and murky world. Common themes include love as a facade, apathetic drug use, and pain that just barely pierces the numbness of glamorous after hours drug parties. Harrowgrove, the R&B project of CJ Davis, wields all this and more on “All You Need Is Luck,” a kind of raw lo-fi take on a genre that has increasingly relied on oil-slick production to create atmosphere. It’s interesting to hear guitars with a little rust on their strings and a voice mixed to add texture instead of echo play on these tropes. It projects a whole different kind of darkness that you might be too used to hearing in other R&B works.
Harrowgrove’s new album, Holy Broken Free Spirit, is out September 17.
