Today: Kendrick Lamar is engaged! A few days ago: the release of his “King Kunta” video.
To Pimp A Butterfly is an intriguing album in that there’s no obvious radio-friendly single. The closest we get is “King Kunta,” which has the funk of an 1980s rap track. The video is, appropriately, a Compton pride party.
What I like about the 1:1 aspect ratio is that it makes the whole thing seem like a beautiful, high quality iPhone video. Normally when people record things vertically it’s grating, but on “King Kunta” it adds to the authenticity. Other videos might add film grain, or washed out colors, or scan lines to make something feel old and real. This is just a modern version of that — and it’s full of great color and camera work too.
