“And he told me to push and he made me feel well / and he told me to leave that vision of hell to the dying”
I want to say, “It’s amazing what an extensive break will do for an artist,” but maybe it’s us. Maybe we just forgot how to appreciate. Belle & Sebastian deserve all the respect in the world for evolving from a twee concern to a general, buoyant indie rock icon. The new video for “Nobody’s Empire” is a nostalgic film reel, typographic lyric video and weird someone-else-lip-syncing video all at once. But it’s the song that sticks out to me at most. It’s a gentle breeze that erupts into gospel, a soft bass groove that never leaves your side and warmth, warmth all around.
The new album Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance comes out January 19 on Matador.
