“Separate Songs” has the climax of an earthquake, but the surprise of a lightning strike. It kicks in abruptly with terrible force. There are enough interesting guitar parts sprinkled about, buoyed by memorable lyrics (“Imagine that focus in real life”) that make this a memorable ear-ringing song. Restorations tells us that it’s about the interplay of starry and growling chords and catharsis exploding out of gravel and ash. It’s just 3 and a half minutes, but what an eruption and resolution.
